ROY Hodgson recently revealed that Crystal Place will be at the “front of the queue” while pursuing the 22-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The young player has had quite an impressive run in as a season-long loan from Chelsea. However, his performance has impressed the English head honcho, Gareth Southgate so much, that he is considering him as a World Cup hopeful. At the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday, he set up the equalizer for James McArthur for a 2-1 win and ensured that the team survives the Premier League.
Hodgson said, “He’s a fantastic player and of course we’ve love to keep him. We’d love to bring him back but the bottom line is he was loaned to us for a season at the end of the season the plan from Chelsea was that he would go back to them so I guess we’ll have to wait and see what their thinking is.”
He also said that if Chelsea decides to make the young player available in any way, they will be the first to get him on board. He said that they will be “to the front of the queue with our hand up” but eventually said that it will be Chelsea’ own decision and he doesn’t have a say in that.
Loftus-Cheek is a South Londoner who has played several games for the Crystal Palace this season. In fact, he has played more with this team that he did at his four years with the Stamford Bridge. His first senior call-up came for the Three-Lions squad when he was to play for two friendly matches against Brail and Germany in November.
In his debut match against the World Champions, he was crowned the Man of the Match. However, soon after this, he suffered from a serious ankle injury, because of which he missed three months of the season. His chances of being in the world cup are currently unclear but if his performance continues, then there will be no stopping this lad.
Hodgson is convinced that his impressive performance after last month’s comeback is enough to land him a ticket to Russia, with the rest of the English squad. He said that after spending three months out of the game, his comeback is very good and this has also given the English selectors a chance to consider him for the team. He has earned his recognition. He added that he is very pleased on knowing that he is at least in the game now. This has helped him reach the same spot he was in December and could still be considered.
Hodgson mentioned that he doesn’t want to see headlines about him wanting to see Loftus-Cheek to the World Cup. He added that it was the selectors’ decision to make and he doesn’t want to interfere in that. He also downplayed the question about him becoming the Manager of the Season because he helped the Eagles soar after they had a devastating start with Frank de Boer. The manager also mentioned that there have been some great managerial acts in the season and he will be applauding loudly for whoever wins.
